This American Life - Heresy

If you are not already a dedicated "This American Life" listener, you need to be. The podcast is really handy to listen to on runs or hour drives.

Anyways, this past weeks edition was a little different in format than the typical show. It told the story of mid-west evangelical preacher Carlton Pearson who has decided that the literal hell doesn't actually exist and that God has extended the gift of heaven to all of His creation regardless of whether they recognize it or not. Take a listen, let me know your thoughts.

Nothing really new I suppose (the unitarian church was built on a bit more extreme version of his message) but it was challenging for me. I have been wrestling for a while now with the fact that a loving God wouldn't extend salvation to people who honestly recognize that they are created beings, that something has gone wrong in their relationship to their creator (because of what Christian's would call original sin) and in turn need their creator to save them.

You can access the MP3 for a couple more days from the following site or listen to the program streaming at any point. Click on the orange icon to download, click on the blue icon to stream.

Cookiejar Philosopher

So today, as I was overindulging on Danish butter cookies, I was thinking about the idea of why we like things that arn't really even that good. Let me quickly interject that I have nothing against butter cookies and actually quite enjoy them with a cup of strong black coffee.

Actually, their flavor somehow reminded me of this particular British biscut that I believe I have loyalties to because of my exposure to them as a child. I had the biscut in question again when I was over in London and they are not very tasty at all, actually quite bland, but the distinctive taste brought a sort of comfort or something from childhood that somehow made them desirable.

So this is pretty much jibberish but I just thought it was interesting how we (I at least) enjoy things for reasons other than pure aesthetic qualities.

Question the old music that you listen to......
